Tane Ward’s Equity Definition

Equity as it is used in this work defines the undoing of structural racism. The inequitable distribution of power, wealth and resources is not a symptom of racism – it is racism. Therefore, Equity is the redistribution of power, wealth and resources.

Bias, hatred and bigotry are all symptoms of racism. Equity work does not directly address those symptoms, but to the material conditions of inequity that those symptoms help to maintain. The USA was founded as a culture of White Supremacy and government, business, nonprofits and communities all operate under that culture. That is why Equity work is always about changing the culture.

Equity work takes place on a policy level and a cultural level simultaneously. Wherever you find yourself, you will find Equity work to be done. Sometimes we don’t have access to the power to make changes, but we can always ask where the power lies. Sometimes we do not understand, but we can always learn. Since the best way to learn is together, Equity work is collective.

You will find racism in the world (both bias and structural), but how you handle this will be dependent entirely on the culture. This tool is designed to help you shift the culture of your organization away from White Supremacy and towards Equity.

Equity is about power.

Equity work is cultural.

Equity work is collective.
